Second Grade Expectations
Reading:
Guided Reading Level:
* 1st quarter = J
* 2nd quarter = K
* 3rd quarter = L
* 4th quarter = M
High Frequency Sight Words:
Students are expected to recognize all words on the list by the end of the school year. There are 52 words by the end of 1st Quarter and 101 words by the end of 2nd quarter. The weekly list is posted under Reading Resources.
Reading Comprehension:
Students will take 2 reading comprehension tests each quarter. These scores will be averaged and reported on the report card. A score of 90% or higher is the expectation.
Phonics and Spelling:
Students will take a weekly phonics and spelling test. There are 12 spelling words each week.

AIMSweb Fluency (words read correct in one minute):
* Fall = 56
* Winter = 81
* Spring = 93
Writing:
Students are scored on their writing pieces using a writing checklist. These will be sent home.
Math:
AIMSweb Computation (MCOMP): an 8 minutes test that assesses the computational skills critical for mathematics success
*Fall expectation: 15 correct answers
*Winter expectation: 31 correct answers
* Spring = 15 correct answer choices
Math 1st Quarter Report Card Skills
At the end of the year, students are expected to be 100% accurate (35 problems in 2 ½ minutes) on their addition and subtraction facts 0 – 20. Your child’s accuracy will be reported in a percentage.
Your child can understand that 3 – digit numbers represent amounts of hundreds, tens and ones.
Your child can count within 1,000 by 5s, 10s and 100s.
Your child can read and write numbers to 1,000 in different ways.
Your child can add or subtract 10 or 100 from a number up to 900.
